… search engine optimisation

For most businesses, search engine optimisation is vital for effective marketing of your website.  Once your website is built, it needs to be seen and, for most people, this means appearing on the first two or three pages of the search engines’ results list.   The search engines (and, to be honest, Google is by far the favourite) produce their results pages by visiting your site, indexing the pages and then including the details in their lists.  Well, that’s the theory.

Details such as the correct balance of keywords in the text, good quality relevant content, file size and load time are all vital elements.  Offering quality content which is informative and of value to your users is an ideal way to increase your visitors and satisfy search engines.  Do your research to check on the best keywords and phrases which are relevant to your site and then use those in your content.  But use them wisely; don’t stuff your pages with keywords as the search engines may consider that too spammy.  Keeping your website fresh and optimised will go a long way to improve your rankings in the search engines and help to build and maintain your visibility.

Recent advice from Google is helpful:

”If your site is rather new and still unknown, a good way marketing technique is to get involved in the community around your topic. Interact and contribute on forums and blogs. Just keep in mind to contribute in a positive way, rather than spamming or soliciting for your site. Just building a reputation can drive people to your site. And they will keep on visiting it and linking to it. If you offer long-lasting, unique and compelling content — something that lets your expertise shine — people will want to recommend it to others. Great content can serve this purpose as much as providing useful tools.”
